Some of the photographic print techniques are described on other sites here (Talbot's processes, daguerreotype, cyanotype, collodion prints and processes before photography).

To identify the different techniques a microscope can be very useful. In this blog from the National Library of Scotland you find some very close-up pictures of a daguerreotype, a silver gelatine print and a chromogenic print with some description.
